Intuitive and Unintuitive Physics

Physical intuition can be used to gain surprising insight into seemingly difficult problems. A prominent example of this is that physical intuition, by way of string theory, has led to progress in abstract problems (of enumerative geometry) that were of wholly independent mathematical interest. At the frontiers of theoretical physics, we have used mirror symmetry and physical intuition to predict mathematical phenomena that mathematicians, themselves, cannot yet prove.
